Second Life Poster Session Guide

For the first time in the JCDL conference series, the poster session in JCDL 2009 will be held simultaneously in real life at the conference and online in Second Life. Authors will present their work and interact with conference attendees and people who could not attend the conference.

Info for Presenters

Dear JCDL Authors:

With the conference less than a week away, I wanted to drop you a quick note just to review the setup for the presentations. The procedures will be the same as with previous JCDL conferences, so if you have presented at JCDL before this may be familiar ground.

Long papers receive a presentation slot of 30 minutes and short papers a slot of 15 minutes. In order to leave time for questions, long paper presenters should plan on talking for 20 minutes and allowing 10 minutes for questions. Short paper presenters should talk for 10 minutes and allow 5 minutes for questions.

Please arrive at the presentation room 15 minutes before the start of the session in order to introduce yourself to the session chair and to handle any needed logistics.

A laptop with the latest version of Microsoft PowerPoint will be available in each presentation room. It will make the changeovers go faster if all presenters will load their slides onto the laptop. Student volunteers will be available before the session starts to help out with this. The wireless network will be available in the presentation rooms, but if you plan to use it in your presentation, it is always wisest to make sure to have a backup plan in case the network (or your server) fails.

The paper presentation schedule, identification as long or short paper, and session chairs can be found on this web site. This information will be kept up-to-date, reflecting any necessary changes to the conference schedule.

Conference Registration Open

Early registration for JCDL 2009 has opened! You can also register to stay at the University of Texas' AT&T Conference Center where the conference will be held. The conference planning committee has selected an interesting array of papers to be presented and keynote speakers to provide a lively exploration of the "state of the art" of digital library discourse and scholarly work. Conference presenters represent 15 different countries and 19 states in the U.S. The Program Committee accepted 29 full papers and 18 short papers. Covering a range of topics presenters will explore digital libraries along the theme of "Designing Tomorrow and Preserving the Past -- Today." Conference keynote speakers include Christine Borgman, Professor & Presidential Chair in Information Studies at UCLA and Gerhard Fischer, Director of the Center for Lifelong Learning and Design and a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The ever popular poster session (over 50 posters) will be held on the evening of Tuesday, June 16th "in real life" at the AT&T Center, as well as in "Second Life." Joint Conference on Digital Libraries

Since 2001, the Joint Conference on Digital Libraries has served as the major international forum focused on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, and social issues. JCDL encompasses the many meanings of the term "digital libraries," including (but not limited to) new forms of information institutions; operational information systems with all manner of digital content; new means of selecting, collecting, organizing, and distributing digital content; and theoretical models of information media, including document genres and electronic publishing. Digital libraries may be viewed as a new form of information institution or as an extension of the services libraries currently provide. Representatives from academe, government, industry, and others are invited to participate in this annual conference. The conference draws from a broad array of disciplines including computer science, information science, librarianship, archival science and practice, museum studies and practice, technology, medicine, social sciences, and humanities. JCDL 2009 will be held in Austin, Texas. JCDL 2009 is hosted by the School of Information at the University of Texas, and is organized by an international committee of scholars and leaders in the Digital Libraries field. Four hundred attendees are expected for the five days of events including a day of cutting edge tutorials; 3 days of papers, panels, and keynotes; and a day of research workshops.
